Devastating Hip Switch Pass

- One minute read - 165 wordsThis is my take on Marcelo Garcia’s hip switch pass. At least, when I visited Marcelo’s gym in NYC, the hip switch pass was a big part of the game there.
As I’ve been playing with it, especially on bigger guys, I’ve noticed a couple entries to leg attacks that will either give a submission or, by avoiding the submission you get the pass.
The basic idea is:
- Flatten their hips to the mat with your body.
- Work your leg free.
Often, when you work your leg free they lock up their feet and you can get a powerful toe hold. One of life’s great pleasures for me was the afternoon I tapped our 270 lbs giant with this toe hold. Twice.
If they react to the toe hold, it is often by straightening their legs, in which case there is a simple knee bar entry.
If they twist and turn to avoid the knee bar, you step your leg out and get the pass:
